Peter and Susan MacDougall use porcelain clay which is fired to 2350 F to make handbuilt and thrown vessels into decorative as well as functional pottery. Peter's career started in clay some 20 years ago and after 12 years of teaching at the university level in art and design, he and Susan moved to Maine and opened  the pottery together making a commitment to producing pottery by hand one piece at a time. With Susan's background in weaving and professional cooking, they joined backgrounds in clay, food and textiles to see what would transpire.

"Our pottery is inspired by the folkart vessels of Japan and Korea as well as the bronze of China but we are eclectic in our surface treatment  which is based on African, Southwest Indian and Asian surface decoration. We see Chinese celedons with dark Korean gray-greens and mottled ash glazes under Japanese geometric patterns with references to fans, water and mountain characters. Recent exposure to African bogolon cloth, Hopi and Navaho blankets are inspiring new imagery. Often these design concepts are not completely evident as we celebrate their cultural uniqueness in our own abstract way."
